Colorless gas. Usually tasteless; at high concentrations, it has a sweet taste. The molecular formula is CH3-Br. The molecular weight is 94.95. The relative density is 1.730 (0/4°C). Melting point -93.66°C.
The boiling point is 3.6°C. The self-ignition point is 537.22℃. The vapor density is 3.27. The vapor pressure is 243.18 kPa (1824mmHg 25°C). The explosion limit of vapor and air mixture is 13.5~14.5%.
Slightly soluble in water; easily soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide. Corrosion of aluminum, magnesium and their alloys. It is flammable in oxygen; it burns only when it encounters high heat and open flame in the atmosphere.
Under atmospheric pressure, it can mix with air to form an explosive mixture in a narrow range, and under high pressure it has a wider range. Decompose by heating to generate bromide. It cannot coexist with metals such as aluminum, dimethyl sulfoxide, and ethylene oxide.
